Day 5 (13 Dec): Choices

In the Christmas story from Matthew 1:18-25, Mary and Joseph's obedience to God is central to fulfilling the prophecy of Jesus' birth. Despite their personal and public challenges—Mary's unexpected pregnancy and the potential scandal—Joseph, a righteous man, chooses to obey God's commands. His choice ensures that Jesus is born into the line of David, fulfilling the prophecy that the Savior would come from this lineage.

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:21

The name "Jesus," meaning "God saves," underscores the transformative power of His birth: to save humanity from sin. Salvation through Jesus is not just about avoiding hell but also about overcoming the power of sin in our daily lives—such as anger, pride, and lust. It's about transformation. Becoming part of God's people, like Mary and Joseph, requires us to make the choice to obey God repeatedly. Their consistent obedience to God's commands led them to salvation, showing that salvation begins with the decision to follow God's will. This transformative power of Jesus gives us hope and optimism in our journey of faith.

Choices matter to our faith journey because small, seemingly insignificant choices can lead to destructive habits. If we repeatedly make poor choices—like holding on to anger or bitterness—they can become habits, shaping our identity and distancing us from God. These habits, whether anger, lust, or greed, can become chains that trap us, leading to guilt, fear, and shame rather than peace and joy.

The key to spiritual growth and healing lies in the choices we make. While we may not always make the best choices, God gently reveals the flaws in our thinking to bring healing. He does not expose our weaknesses to shame us, but to help us confront and change them. Repentance and turning to Jesus are crucial steps in breaking free from the chains of sin and embracing His grace. This grace brings forgiveness and acceptance, empowering us to live in greater strength and hope. Ultimately, following Jesus and making daily choices to obey Him leads to transformation and a deeper relationship with God.

Prayer:

Thank you, God, for giving us the grace to make good choices to forsake that which has captured us in bondage and to walk into a place of greater strength and hope.
